Marco Santini has sculpted more than the beautiful hair seen in Glamour, Marie Claire, and Vogue magazines. He has managed to shape his professional path from various ends of the world – from Florence to London, from Spain to New York. Beginning his work in some of the best salons in Europe and continuing on at Bumble and Bumble in New York, he is now current co-owner of Ion Studio in Manhattan and spearheading education for Davines North America. Marco Santini has put in his time and hasn’t stopped progressing as a creative professional, all while managing to make people feel beautiful and empowered along the way.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I started my freelance career assisting Sam Mcknight, Guido Palau, Orlando Pita, Ward and Eugene Soleiman and that was in the 90s.. I had already been a hair dresser for 6 years.
What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?
My biggest career challenge was, and still is, combining salon work and freelance work. It’s not easy to balance the two of them. When one is doing well, sometimes the other suffers.
Do you have a signature look or style that you are known for?
I love to make pretty hair, and soft shapes… Effortless, suitable hair.
Which hair products or tools are always in your kit?
These days I’m using Davines and I like to carry with me more than I need. Sometimes you never know what you’re going to use. I always say my bag is my portable salon.
What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago?
Be available and always be willing. It’s the only way you’re going to learn and improve.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Never play it safe. It’s always better to make a big mistake and learn from it.
What is the next chapter for you?
My next chapter is building an academy in North America for Davines. We are going to start education in July.
How would you describe your beauty and hair philosophy?
There is always a way to make everyone look good. You just have to find the way to make current trends suitable to each person you have in front of you.
