MANE MASTER: Peter Butler

Peter Butler Having studied under some of the most talented artists in the industry, Peter Butler creates beautiful heads of hair. Combining the softness of the French, the effortlessness of California, the silhouettes of New York, and the craftsmanship of the English, his work is deliberately and beautifully constructed. Having worked on countless celebrities, advertising campaigns, red carpets, and editorial spreads, Peter has even created the hairstyles for 7 consecutive Sports Illustrated covers. Peter holds the secret to the sexy, gorgeous hair all of us want, or want to create. But becoming a master isn’t easy. Peter lets us in on his journey below…

Emily Ratajkowski Slicked Hair by Peter Butler How did you get your start in the industry? I moved to Paris in the mid 90’s and started assisting there. I met Serge Normant in New York and became his assistant and I was introduced to my agent Timothy Priano by him. Before that I was working in LA with Sally Hershberger at Jonathans Salon. She used to throw me clients sometimes, we got on great. Sally is rad and continues to be an inspiration I also met Kevin Ryan at that point in my life, he was and still is super inspiring.   What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it? I think the biggest challenge was making the decision to leave the stability of the salon and go freelance. I was broke for a few years but I gained a lot of experience. I never said no to assisting jobs and just kept at it. I never gave up… still haven’t. Hair by Peter Butler Who are some role models who have inspired you? Danilo and Oribe were the first hairdressers whose work I could identify visually. They had a signature, and texture and style. Later it was the French guys, Julien d’Ys and Bruce Libre, Serge Normant. The Brits are right up there as well. I was very lucky to meet Vidal Sassoon once and groom him for a Behind the Chair video that Matthew Rolston shot. Guido taught me a lot and Malcolm Edwards is an incredible hairdresser.   Do you have a signature look or style that you are known for? I suppose I’m known for beachy sexy wavy hair. I also love really graphic hair as well. I love the construction of a look and building it from the blow-dry to the hairpieces/extensions/falls. Peter Butler Quote What was your last major makeover that you’ve done? Can’t say that I have recently…well there was a Faux Bob moment at the 2015 Emmys with Claire Danes. The producers of her show thought she had cut her hair and were freaking out!   Which hair products or tools are always in your kit? Leonor Greyl, R+Co., Oribe, Renee Furterer, and some Sebastian. I am obsessed with the GHD irons and their brushes. I also love the Japanese Y.S. Park round brushes, they are awesome. Voluminous Hair by Peter Butler What is your favorite Instagram account to follow? FuckJerry for sure.   What advice would you give yourself 10 years ago? Be more confident and believe in the process. Trust your instincts more. Cindy Crawford Hair by Peter Butler What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? What advice would you give to new stylists? Go for it and keep your focus on the hair.   What is the next chapter for you? I’d like to do more wig work. I’m constantly amazed and challenged by them. Maybe work in London with a wig master there? Who knows, I’m always open. I’d also love to work with a brand to develop products. I’d be really happy to speak with young, upcoming stylists to support and encourage them. I don’t know how any or all of the above will manifest but I’m working on it.
