MANE MASTER: Tippi Shorter

Tippi Shorter

As Aveda’s Global Artistic Director for texture, some would call Tippi Shorter a natural hair QUEEN. Flawlessly executing gorgeous looks on our fav celebrity naturalistas, including Alicia Keys and Serena Williams, Tippi also leads demos for Aveda presentations at Congress and Naha. Though don’t put her in a natural hair box, Tippi can work will all hair types and textures and create something wonderful. The first time I met her she had created gorgeous pillowy spiral curls on natural blonde hair. As a former salon owner, Tippi soon found her niche in the editorial styling and celebrity world where she spends most of her time now. Keep reading to learn a thing or two the artist herself.

How did you get your start in the industry?

I was a hair model for my then hairstylist, Lillie Frierson. Her mom, Doris Mosely, is a legendary stylist in LA and I used to do a lot of their hair shows. I always loved the creative and inspiring energy that the beauty industry has. That was my first “hair” connection. During college, I just knew I wanted to be in a creative environment, so I signed up for beauty school. Right after graduation, I scored a job with another well known hairstylist, Jamika Wilson. I assisted her for a year before going out on my own.

What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?

One of my biggest career challenges was 12 years ago. I was on year 5 as a salon owner in NYC. I was also a few years into my freelance career. Juggling the salon, staff, editorial opportunities, and travel with celebrities became overwhelming for me. I had to make hard decisions about my career.

I decided to sell my salon and go freelance full time and I definitely think that was the best decision for me.

What was your last major makeover that you’ve done?
