Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have to have noticed Hilary Duff’s new mermaid blue hair color. Inspired by her recent vacation in Cabo, hair colorist Amber Maynard said she “was so mesmerized by the water and wanted it on her head! Luckily she was already blonde, so it was easy to get the color she wanted.”
To recreate something equally mesmerizing and colorful, Amber insists that these fun colors only work on hair that has been previously lightened.
If brunette and opting for a change, make sure to prep hair by going pale blonde with bleach. Be patient with your colorist, as this can take a while.
Not willing to go through the dramatic lengths for your color? There’s three options the 901 colorist suggests…
1. HAIR CHALK
“Great when you don’t want to go through the trouble [of coloring your hair], chalk is a great tool to achieve fun colors!”
“Either tape in, clip in, or individual. They come light enough that you can color them to your desired shade, and some even come pre colored.
3. COLORED CONDITIONERS
“For some blondes that are scared to commit to the colors there is a great line called Evo. It is a conditioner that temporarily stains the hair for a day or two or more depending on what you want.”
Also, be sure to be 100% sure when going for a dramatic change, as Hilary Duff even admits in an MTV video that “it takes a while to get used to. My makeup has to be different, colors that I wear have to change a little bit.”
