Kendall Jenner’s Stylist Shares Tips on How to Create Mermaid Waves on Curly Hair

Okay, we know what you’re thinking. Summer mermaid waves and curls just don’t seem to mix. Stylists, however, would disagree. If you have curly hair and would love to achieve that stunning mermaid waves look on your natural curls, read on below for tips from celeb stylist and curly-haired queen Irinel de León, who tends to the tresses of celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Chrissy Teigen.

1. Prep your hair with a solid styling cream.

First, prep your curls with the right styling cream. The right one for you will depend on your curl type, but overall, Irinel recommends Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Styling Cream ($26.00). This light, frizz-fighting formula provides long lasting hold and a super smooth style.

2. Stretch out curls using a wide-toothed comb.

Next, using a wide-toothed comb and a blow dryer, you’ll want to comb out your curls slightly until they’re nice and stretched. If you have the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, she recommends using the wide-tooth comb attachment for this. It will make your life so much easier.

3. Use a Bondi Boost Triple Barrel Wand.

Now, for the fun part! Irinel suggests using a Bondi Boost Triple Barrel Wand ($57.99). You can create the most natural and gorgeous looking mermaid waves with it. Whether your curls are short or long, this wand will absolutely do the trick. It also waves your locks up in record time — a feature our thick-haired curlies will definitely appreciate.

4. Work in two-inch sections to style the hair.

Irinel suggests working in two-inch sections. However, if your hair is thinner, you might be able to get away with larger sections. Start at the nape of the neck and work your way up in these sections with the wave wand. You’ll want to hold for at least several seconds on each section before releasing the iron. And voilà! Perfectly styled mermaid waves on your (already gorgeous) natural hair.

What other looks are you considering this summer? Curtain bangs, maybe? 😏
