NEED TO KNOW: Early Morning Hair Hacks for When You’re on the Go

Joan Smalls

Early mornings are so not the time to attempt hairstyling — especially when you’re in a rush. Frizzy hair, a shrunken afro, and limp tresses are just not ideal. (Unless you’re going for that disheveled bedhead look, then do you, girl!). For on-the-go gals who hate sacrificing fabulous hair for punctuality, we’ve got you covered with some surefire morning hair hacks that will help you get out the door in style.

TAME FRIZZ WITH OIL

When undoing twists, braids, rollers, or any set style, apply your oil of choice to your fingertips. Oiled fingers will prevent frizz and leave your set style flawlessly smooth, defined, and neat.

TOOTHBRUSH FOR FLYAWAYS

Never let fly-aways ruin a cute ponytail ever again! Take an old or new toothbrush (to be used only for your hair from this point on), apply gel or hair cream to your edges, and brush upwards and to the side to create a sleek look.

WEAR A SATIN SCARF IN THE SHOWER TO PREVENT WET STRANDS

If water still manages to get inside your shower cap, wear a silk or satin scarf underneath. The fabric of the scarf won’t dry out your hair and it serves as extra protection from the water.

TWIST OR BRAID DAMP HAIR THE NIGHT BEFORE

For perfect curls in the morning, twist or braid on hair dampened with water, oils, and your favorite setting product.

INSTANT UPDO WITH BRAIDED PIGTAILS

Create a stylish updo by interlocking two braided pigtails into a bun.

CLEAN PROTECTIVE STYLES WITH BABY WIPES

Washing protective hairstyles like box braids and havana twists can be such a hassle. The synthetic hair takes can take a little over a day to fully dry and the dampness can leave your hair feeling incredibly heavy. Don’t ever deal with this. If your scalp is feeling icky and you don’t have the time to wash, just tend to your scalp with baby wipes.

ITCHY SCALP

A dry scalp can cause a lot of problems, including itchiness. Mix together a dab of shea butter and a teaspoon of coconut oil then apply this soother to your scalp. You’ll feel hydrated all day long. Also try apple cider vinegar for instant pH balancing.

CREATE INSTANT CURLS WITH A PONYTAIL BRAID

If you forgot to set your curlers in the night before, no worries. Gather your hair into a high ponytail and create 2-4 braids. Get dressed, have some breakfast, do whatever you do in the morning while you wait 15 minutes for your curls to set. Undo your braids and finish the look with holding spray.

TURBO WASH ‘N GO

The wash n’ go method, though easy, may not be so convenient during the morning rush (especially during the ice-cold winter months). Avoid the extra maintenance and the sniffles with the turbo version. Spritz your hair with water, apply leave-in, pick your roots with a wide tooth comb, and go on about your day.

HALF UPDO KNOT

Take the top half of your hair and separate into two sections, then make a knot. Adorn your look with a headband or decorative pins.

USE OLD TIGHTS AS A HEADBAND

Can’t find your headband? Use old tights or knee-highs — they’re more elastic anyway!

HEADWRAP

If you really can’t deal, just wrap your hair in a beautiful scarf. Simple!
