Nestled in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn, you’ll find Chelsey Pickthorn’s namesake salon. The space is charming and rustic while boasting distressed hardwood floors, white tiled walls and a large cow skull that overlooks just three leather chairs.
Using a bar cart that moonlights as a salon trolley, Chelsey cuts, colors and styles the strands of top models, international royalty and Vogue editors. Her hand-painted color process, which can take up to six hours at a time, earned her the title “Miracle Colorist” by New York magazine in 2013.
Rejecting traditional foil methods to process hair color, Chelsey instead hand paints each strand, mixing up to 20 shades to reach that ideal hue for her prestigious clientele. It’s this level of supreme attention to detail that keeps the stylist/colorist in high demand.
More than being a major player in the color game, it’s also her earnest desire for Pickthorn to become a neighborhood staple that renders the salon a local favorite. On occasion, Chelsey has been known to transform the salon’s stage from a seating area to a performance platform for aspiring bands in the area (follow @colormelive for details!). It’s unique offerings such as this one that shows just how much Chelsey really gets the Brooklyn neighborhood.
