If there’s one science-based brand revered by hairstylists and consumers alike, it’s Olaplex. Every time I post a media mailer from the company, I get the most (figurative) tongues wagging on Instagram. So, when I had a chance to conduct an Olaplex hair mask review, you better believe I jumped on it.
Earlier this month, the brand launched its first-ever product of this kind—a N°.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask—and below is everything you need to know.
Olaplex No 8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask: $28
My VIP mailer arrived in a sleek, plastic Olaplex-branded pouch. Inside, I received the coveted hair mask, a specially designed brush, and the brand’s revered N°.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo. Its contents are pictured in the image below.
The mask itself ($28) features avocado oil as one of its hero ingredients. The formula is designed to add shine, smoothness, and body while providing intense moisture to treat damaged hair. The vegan product is free from gluten, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and phosphates.
The brand suggests one pump for short hair, two pumps for medium hair, and three pumps for long hair. Following a double-shampoo rinse, I used two mask pumps. I think next time I’ll opt for three since my hair is on the longer side than medium. As the brand boasts, the mask formula is lightweight, so you definitely don’t feel it bogging down your hair. I applied my pumps to the ends and middle of my mane and dispersed it with my fingers. I left it on for 10 minutes and rinsed.
I usually get a sense of how my mane will dry based on how it feels freshly washed. I will say my hair felt squeaky clean. I was on the go and didn’t have anywhere to be of note, so I let my hair air dry and wore it as such for the next two days. It worked extremely well with my curls, giving them plenty of shine and dimension. I couldn’t possibly post an Olaplex hair mask review without the big post-application reveal, amirite? Check out those vibrant all-natural waves below.
I met a friend for dinner the evening of my treatment, and the first thing she commented on was my hair. I don’t typically wear my hair in natural curls, so it was an adjustment to see. But the curls looked lively and healthy. Oddly enough, my hair looked healthier in curl mode than straight (once I eventually used my flat iron). In both cases, the hair was extremely soft, but it shined more vibrantly with curls. Obviously, I need to use the mask more than once to get its full effect, but this was a good start. I plan to incorporate it into my next several washes to see the real magic happen.
The Bottom Line
This buzzy new product has gotten rave reviews all over the web, so it’s definitely worth a try. Also, its price point is pretty impressive for high-quality haircare. Like with anything, it’s important to give the mask several consecutive uses before forming a final opinion. It’s refreshing to know I can plop this bad boy on during days I plan to rock those natural waves!
