It’s no secret, but your hair and your skin—while both in need of constant care and nutrients—are composed differently. So, it makes sense a product ingredient that works for one may not work for the other. That said, there are, in fact, skincare ingredients that are good for hair.
And who better to break down the most versatile ingredients in the beauty sphere than Lavinia Popescu, Vice President of Research and Development for Olaplex! Keep reading as the hair expert breaks down universally beneficial ingredients, and why they’re so key.
Mane Addicts: What are some effective skincare ingredients that are also beneficial in hair care?
Ceramides, lipids, humectants, hyaluronic acid: They moisturize and soften the hair fiber.
Avocado oil: It provides incredible moisture, it softens the hair and provides additional vitamins.
Rose hip seed extract: It provides moisture and shine.
MA: Are there any popular skincare ingredients that perform better on hair actually? Why?
LP: While we can’t say that skincare ingredients work better in hair than skin, some popular skin care ingredients, such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, humectants, oils and botanical ingredients can work well on the hair to condition, protect and moisturize the hair fiber. They’re nourishing for the hair. Our hair generally lacks moisture, so using ingredients that are super hydrating moisturize strands for added shine.
MA: What are some common crossover ingredients found in Olaplex products?
LP: Some common crossover ingredients found in Olaplex products (depending on the product) include botanical ingredients as well as ceramides, lipids, amino acids and hyaluronic acid. These are efficacious when it comes to moisturizing hair. Haircare products that contain high quality ingredients help with the health of the hair, which is paramount to any style.
MA: Is there anything else you’d like to add on this matter?
LP: We tend to forget that our hair and skin are connected. We often will neglect our hair way more than we’d even think to neglect our skin. The scalp is also an extension of our skin and it’s important to provide both with high-quality ingredients. Hair that looks beautiful always needs to be healthy first.
Speaking of beauty product ingredients, HERE‘s what should always be avoided in both haircare and skincare!
