The New Hair Tool for Natural Hair That We’re Really Excited About

If you’ve been on your natural hair journey for a while, you know about the many hair hacks, products, and accessories that promise to make your routine easier and faster with better results. It is super-rare for a tool to hit the market, specifically for people with tight curls and coils. It may actually be unheard of…so you can imagine our excitement when we first saw The Mint by Richualist advertised on social media. We geeked out a little. Here’s everything you need to know about the new hair tool.

About Richualist

Founded by Dawn Myers, Richualist is a brand with a mission to make it easy for all women of color to feel beautiful in their own skin. The brand’s focus is to “engineer new tech for textured hair to make styling faster, easier, and more convenient.” Myers spent more than four years working on developing The Mint.

About The Mint

According to the site, The Mint is “an all-in-one hair tool that detangles, applies product, and styles with just one stroke.” If you are currently enduring wash days that take hours, this is huge! The tool has the potential to improve product penetration, decrease shrinkage, minimize the amount of product used for styles, and increase moisture retention—it basically addresses all of the issues people with natural hair tackle. It’s so exciting to see a tool hitting the market that was created with type 4 curls in mind. This is representation.

How to Use It

The Mint comes with six attachments: a mint wand, three minting arms (short arm, long arm, prayer hand), three bristle plates (short bristle plate, long sparse bristle plate, long dense bristle plate), an empty styling pod (additional pods sold separately), a pod resetter tool, a pod filling spoon, and a charger.

To use The Mint, you want to start with clean, wet hair. You then want to part your hair into small sections and apply a leave-in conditioner. Attach the best bristle plates for your hair to the wand as well as the minting arm (though that is optional). Next, fill the empty pod with your styling gel or cream before attaching the pod to the wand.

After priming your pod, activate the warming mechanism (this step is optional but it’s also where the magic happens). By pressing a button on the tool, it will warm the product in the pod. Warming products significantly enhances product penetration.

Once your pod is inserted, you’re ready for the next step: you’ll press a button that distributes the product as the wand is detangling your hair. You can stop here or you can then use the minting arms to further define your curls and then air-dry or finish drying your hair with a blowdryer.

The Mint is available for pre-order on Richualist.com and will be shipped in January 2023. At $450 it is definitely an investment but if it delivers, we can see it becoming a staple in a lot of people’s hair kits. We don’t know about you but we can’t get our hands on one. We have a feeling it’s going to be a game-changer.
