LA-Based Stylists Reveal How to Get California Girl Hair

Is there anything more enviable than Cali girl hair? West coast ladies find a way to make everything look effortless – from a glam night in Hollywood to a brunch in Venice. Luckily, even if you’re freezing and frazzled, you can lean into the ease of California hair. Here’s what you need to know, straight from the pros who are based there.

While Cali girls are diverse, Chad Kenyon, colorist hailing from the Ramirez Tran salon in Beverly Hills notes that the one uniting characteristic that unites all his clients is “is a vive of simplicity coupled with a low-maintenance salon routine,” he says, adding that his Cali chicas are busy, often bi-coastal and need to be photo-ready 24/7.

So how do you reconcile a simple routine with doing it for the gram? Senior stylist at 901 Salon, Morgan Parks creates her looks based off her clients personality, and then simplifies it. Her trick to making a look effortless – even for everyday is accepting that it’s going to do it’s own thing and owning it, which is a very Zen approach to haircare we could all benefit from. “By not spending too much time making something look perfect, but more so organic and natural, and giving it that “I woke up like this” feeling. From the cut to the color, it needs to match,” she continues.

Texture

For Morgan, the key element to a Cali girl look is texture – because beyond stick straight hair just looks like you’re trying too hard. “Think perfectly imperfect,” she says, adding that her fave texturizing sprays include R+Co Soft Wave Spray ($29) and Oribe Dry Texture Spray ($46).

Low Maintenance Color Placement

Aside from style, the right color placement is a shortcut to Cali girl hair. “Think low maintenance with your hair color and skip out on those every 6 week highlight appointments,” she advises.

Depending on where you live, however, you may have to fake effortless. If you’re actually in LA, that water might shorten the life of your color.  “Because the water in SoCal is (seriously the worst  ever in regards to being damaging to hair color & skin!) my CA girls come into see me a bit more frequently in between balayage appointments – more so than my NY, MIA, Mexico & Spain clients,” says Chad.  “More Specifically, LA water has so much lime and heavy minerals in It that it dulls hair color and contributes to unwanted warm tones in hair. To combat the damaging minerals in the water, Chad gives his clients “red carpet appointments” that include a super shine gloss, a tonal adjusting if needed and an Olaplex Pro Salon Treatment.

If you need more Cali girl inspo, Morgan lists her top ladies as Georgia Gibbs, Jessica Biel and Rosie Huntington Whitley. For Chad, the look is exemplified by  Kiernan Shipka, Karrueche Tran, Rachel Matthews (from Frozen 2) and Aqua Parios.

Utilize Natural Hair Color

If there’s one thing Cali girls do differently, it’s embrace and successfully incorporate low maintenance vibes, even if that means relying on their natural hair color and texture.  “I think not being afraid to utilize their natural hair color and incorporate that depth into the hair is essential, says Morgan.
