Welcome to the future, Mane Addicts! While we may have envisioned wearing our hair under space helmets in the 2020s, we’ll be looking backwards as we move forward – with a literal 2020 vision. Some of the coolest styles that we predict will takeover the beginning of the decade are updated versions of looks that ruled in the last century and earlier in the millennium. Since you can bet on history repeating itself, expect 2020 to remember the early aughts fondly, complete with non blended highlights, playful edges and every kind of hair accessory.
If all the fashion weeks could agree on one thing, it would be the mullet. That’s right - plan for 2020 to be a spicy mix of business and partying, via the infinitely edgy look.
Extensions make it easier than ever to try on a longer length minus the painstaking care involved in growing out your locks. We predict this flattering look will be a 2020 mainstay.
The playful 90s style with unlimited potential will take us into the 20s.
Out of the Box Accessories
From butterflies to tree ornaments and rhinestones, hair is naked without accessories.
“Caramel lowlights are a great technique to add depth and dimension for darker tones, while making your hair look thicker and more voluminous. And, lowlights are the perfect easy way to make a change after you’ve been highlighting for some time,” says Brittany King, colorist at the Mare Salon in West Hollywood California and the Larry King Salon in London.
“We’ll see ‘golden arches’ for the winter and beyond. It’s not white and it’s not gold but this puts the perfect blonde tones around the face,” says Brittany, who points to Gigi Hadid as the look’s poster girl.
Whether you want to sport a skinny band or one that’s chunky and commands attention, headbands elevate every look.
Perfectly blended color was a teens trends - in the 20s we’ll be playing up the contrasting nature of our highlights - think Cruella de Ville vibes.
If the early 00s are any indication, we can expect straight and sleek hair to take over the 2020s.
Are bangs back? According to Brittany, flattering fringe will undergo a revival. Fringes and layers will not only frame the face but they’ll make any color pop. They are great to add to any length hair and gives your hair bounce by taking off the dead ends and weight of the hair,” she says, referencing Jane Birkin as the ultimate, timeless muse.
Non binary styles will stay on trend as gender norms are continuously challenged.
In the 20s, color knows no season. “We will be seeing a lighter version of the winter colors we have seen of copper and warm brunettes,” says Brittany King.
