6 Unexpected Things That Are Making Your Hair Greasy

Greasy hair is a pain in the ass to deal with. We said it. No matter how many oily hair shampoos you try or oil-free styling products you use, that never seems to be enough. Have you ever stopped to wonder if it’s something else? Maybe it goes deeper than the haircare products you’re using and the routine you follow? That can often be the case, as there are a number of unexpected things that make hair greasy. Scroll below to discover what they are, so you can prevent over-oily strands.

1. Washing your hair too much.

You may find yourself washing your hair more often to get rid of the excess grease, but that’s only doing more harm than good. When you use shampoo, you strip your hair of its natural oils. To combat that, your strands produce more. This is one of the reasons your hair may be greasier than usual. Try washing your hair two to three times a week to give your tresses a break.

2. Using haircare products incorrectly.

It’s not enough to limit your shampoo use, you have to ensure you’re using it properly. You want to make sure you’re really massaging your scalp with it to get rid of all the dirt, oil, and grime. And with your conditioner, you need to really wash it out. If there is any left over, it can contribute to greasy hair.

You also want to steer clear of products that promise to add shine and moisture, because they’ll increase oil production. Be very careful to use the right products for your hair needs to avoid greasy strands.

3. Brushing your strands too often.

Yes, you want to brush your strands. But there is such a thing as brushing them too much. The more you run your brush or comb from the scalp to the ends, the more oil is produced. It’s best to stick to brushing through the strands, rather than all the way through to limit oil production stimulation.

And if your brush is dirty or filled with loose strands, that also contributes to greasy locks. The old tresses transfer their dirt and grime to your clean tresses.

4. Touching your hair constantly.

Running your fingers through your hair may look sexy, but it can do a number on your tresses. Your fingers have oil on them as well, so when you run them through your strands, it transfers. And your hair ends up looking greasier than it should.

5. Sleeping on unwashed pillowcases.

Let this be a reminder to wash your pillowcases (and even bedding) regularly. Considering you sleep on it every night, there’s a lot of not fun things lurking on the surface. You should wash your pillowcases at least every two weeks. Though don’t be shy, do it more often if needed.

6. Tying your tresses in a ponytail regularly.

Ponytails are a great way to keep your hair out of your face. Not to mention, there are so many stylish ways to sport the look. But, and it’s a big but, they can make your strands extra greasy. When your locks are tied back with a hair tie, it makes it easier for dirt and oil to get stuck on your scalp. Let your hair down often to prevent this.
