Turmeric has been long celebrated in Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisines and medicine. The superfood spice has recently made its way to the beauty space, and it’s time to break down turmeric’s benefits in hair products.
To share more info, we reached out to Nikita Mehta, cofounder of Ayurvedic-inspired Fable & Mane haircare. The brand incorporates turmeric into the majority of its products.
We love turmeric in our food, but it also has amazing benefits for hair. Turmeric promotes a healthy scalp through its anti-inflammatory properties. Categorized as a spice, it works brilliantly as an exfoliant and helps soothe the scalp and gets rid of build-up.
Fable & Mane is a brand centered on ancient Indian practices—it’s therefore a no-brainer that turmeric would be thrown into the mix. “Turmeric was a natural remedy in our family,” Mehta tells Mane Addicts. “It was our grandma’s go-to spice to heal everything. That’s why we included it in our SahaScalp Amla Soothing Serum, HoliRoots Shampoo, conditioner and hair mask.”
Turmeric’s Specific Benefits
Turmeric has long been heralded for having general health advantages. But it’s its star component curcumin, that boasts hair benefits.
“Curcumin inhibits inflammation, which causes hair loss through hair follicle destruction,” Mehta explains. “Ingesting Turmeric is also fantastic for optimal scalp health as its anti-inflammatory properties help reverse the Anagen Phase of the hair cycle to produce more hair.”
How to DIY Turmeric Haircare
Shaz & Kiks—another popular hair brand that incorporates turmeric into its products—goes into depth about the spice on their website. They even go as far as listing a two-ingredient DIY hair oil, explaining that turmeric’s “anti-fungal and antibacterial properties can treat scalp conditions and irritations such as dandruff, fungus, dryness and itchiness.” The homemade hair oil consists of four TBL of grated turmeric and a 1/2 cup of coconut or sweet almond oil. You stir the turmeric in low heat for 12-15 minutes, then strain it when you finish.
