By now, you’re likely all too familiar with Mercury retrograde. You know to expect texts for exes, technology to go awry, and for most things to generally not go as planned. Unfortunately, Mercury isn’t the only planet to go retrograde. That’s right, just about every planet in our solar system appears to spin back sometime throughout the year. While we’re done with Mercury retrogrades for the year, we’re closing out 2021 with a Venus retrograde.
The planet of love and beauty goes retrograde in the sign of Capricorn on Sunday, December 19, and will remain in retrograde until January 29, 2022. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. And because this planet rules all things love, beauty, and attraction, you’ll want to avoid making any drastic hair changes during this time period. Put down the scissors, step away from the box dye, and cancel any unnecessary beauty appointments for the next 40 days or so.
Don’t just take our word for it, expert astrologers are also advising against noticeable changes to your appearance. We spoke with celebrity astrologer Lauren Ash of Lauren Ash Astrology, along with astrology teacher and celebrity astrologer Lina (otherwise known as @astrolinaaa on TikTok). Learn why you should hold off on updating your appearance during Venus retrograde, when it’s safe to get that new haircut you’ve been thinking about, and so much more about this astrological event below!
Why should we avoid making drastic hair changes during Venus retrograde?
As mentioned, Venus rules love, beauty, romance, the like. Changing our appearance when it goes retrograde isn’t the best idea. This is because we likely aren’t thinking as clearly as we should be, nor are we feeling our best. Lauren explains that “when a planet goes retrograde, it can skew our perception of whichever area of life that planet holds influence. Venus retrogrades are notorious for skewing our self–esteem or causing major shakeups to our love lives. This can lead to some impulsive beauty decisions we may regret later.”
Lina echoes this point and notes it’s important to not carry out any other drastic changes. They share that this means “no haircuts, no filler, no breakups or new relationships, and no big purchases, as Venus’s energy is not being fully expressed.”
This tends to be what is advised for most Venus retrogrades, not just the one happening in a few days. Hold off on any impulsive, long-term beauty decisions for the time being. Trust these astrologers, they know what they’re talking about.
What if someone already has a salon visit scheduled?
Not all of us plan our lives around major astrological occurrences. Some of you are probably just learning that Venus even goes retrograde. If you already have a salon appointment booked, don’t cancel it just yet. You might be able to still make it happen. Lauren shares that “general trims, color maintenance, or pre-planned changes are safe to explore during Venus retrograde.” However, she does stress that we all will be feeling pretty impulsive. “What you’ll want to avoid is booking a last-minute appointment with your stylist because your ex posted a pic of their new girlfriend on the gram,” she shares.
Lina shares that Venus retrograde is sometimes an inspiring period for hairstylists. “There are some hairstylists who find themselves even more talented when Venus is retrograde,” they note. “Some are finding new techniques and getting creative with the way they use their Venusian energy.”
The lesson here is that general hair maintenance is totally fine. But a complete makeover is not. It may seem like the best thing to do, but once Venus goes direct, you might end up hating what you’ve done. Save yourself before it’s too late.
Which signs will have the hardest time trying to avoid making drastic hair changes?
Not every sign is going to feel the effects of Venus retrograde as strongly as others. Lina mentions paying attention to Capricorn risings, like Kylie Jenner. “Venus will be hanging out in their first house of physical appearance until early March, so they will probably be feeling the urge the most,” she says.
It’s not just Capricorn risings that will feel this retrograde, however. Lauren shares that “Venus-ruled signs Taurus and Libra will feel especially anxious to switch things up and feel a need to reinvent their image during this time.” While it won’t be a bad idea per se, it won’t be the best idea. Additionally, cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) “may even feel pushed outside of their comfort zones.” Lauren notes this “might tempt them into a crazy hair color in order to feel in control of something again.” But don’t do it. Instead, confront those problems head-on. A drastic new ‘do is only a temporary fix for a long-term problem.
When is the last date someone can make a drastic hair change before Venus retrograde begins?
You still have some time to make any wild changes to your appearance before Venus retrograde in Capricorn kicks off. We are currently in the shadow period and have been since November 17 of this year. “If you’re the extra careful type, you’ll want to avoid making changes,” Lauren says. “However, if you’re feeling a bit adventurous or you’re someone who has been planning this change for a while, you’re safe to switch things up until December 19.”
And when is it safe to make a hair change after Venus retrograde has ended?
Once Venus goes direct in Capricorn on January 29, 2022, you should be all clear to make those drastic hair changes you’ve been thinking about. Both Lauren and Lina advise waiting until after the shadow period is over just to be safe. This means you should hold off until March 1, 2022 to make those dramatic hair changes you’ve been thinking about. Do with that information what you will.
Venus retrograde isn’t the only time you shouldn’t cut your hair. Full moons aren’t a great time for a haircut either. Find out why HERE!
