You’ve seen the silicone-free labels. But what’s so bad about this old school ingredient?
While it isn’t a toxic chemical, it’s definitely got some disadvantages. Traditionally used to lock in moisture, silicone in shampoos and conditioners coats the shaft of each strand. But this industry standard component can actually distress your tresses. From a weighty feel to dryness and build up, silicone can cause some serious trouble.
That’s why we’re breaking down every myth and mystery surrounding silicone below.

Not all silicones are created equal
When it comes to silicone hair products, there are certain combinations of this chemical that are worse than others. Dimethicone, cyclomethicone, amodimethicone, dimethiconol, to name a few, are ones to be wary of. These are non-water soluble silicones. With these nasty chemicals, no amount of rinsing can purify your hair, ultimately allowing silicone to accumulate on each strand. While this may help to prevent breakage in the short term, or add density to thin-feeling strands, silicone build up has lasting drawbacks. Over time, this can lead to dryness and dullness as discussed below.
Beware of build up and dryness
Most silicones are not water soluble, which makes them difficult to wash out. This, coupled with the fact that the purpose of this product is to seal each strand, can lead to some pretty annoying problems. Silicone can build up on your strands, weighing hair down over time. In addition, this build up might lead to dryness after prolonged use, making it impossible for moisture to penetrate each strand. That silky-ness that silicone gives your strands initially eventually wears off, leaving your tresses dull and dry. Ick.

Opt for an anti-residue shampoo
If you’ve been using non-water soluble silicones, don’t fret. Your strands can still be saved – with the help of a powerful clarifying shampoo, like Ouai’s detox shampoo. These build-up busting products will remove even the toughest silicones if used weekly. But note that clarifying shampoos can be a bit harsh on your hair. Make sure to follow your clarifying rinse with your favorite mask, to lock in moisture post-wash.
