How to Dip Dye Hair
If you’re looking to dip dye your hair at home, there are a few things to keep in mind. The goal of dip dying is to create a contrast of color that is focused entirely on your mid-shaft to ends, and in some cases just along your ends. Dip dyes can blend up into your natural, or canvas color, or they can be left as a harsh line for a more avant-garde look.
Dip dye hair color can be a bit complicated to execute at home, so we typically recommend seeing a professional stylist to achieve this look. But, if you want to get it done at home, then here is how to get started.
Step 1: Gather your products.
Before purchasing or gathering any hair color products, you will need to decide on the color you want. If you have dark hair and are looking for a brighter, lighter fashion color at the ends, you will need hair bleach as well as the color of choice. If you are going darker, then permanent color or a fashion color for your ends should suffice. We also recommend keeping a comb and clips on hand.
Step 2: Brush and section your hair.
Start with your hair parted where you would naturally part it, but comb out any knots or tangles. From here, section your hair into four sections—a section on each side from the ear to the face, and two sections in the back, separated by a single parting line down the middle back.
Step 3: Mix up and apply.
In step three, there will be a few variations depending upon your color choice. If you need to bleach your hair before applying the color, use a bowl and brush to apply it to your ends, let it process according to the recommended processing time, then rinse, and dry. After that, simply apply your fashion color to the previously bleached areas. If bleaching isn’t necessary for the color you are trying to achieve, simply apply the color with a bowl and brush to the bottom of each section of hair, and let it sit for the recommended amount of time.
Step 4: Rinse and dry.
After everything has processed the recommended amount of time, simply rinse out your color, shampoo, and condition, then dry. Remember, a dip dye doesn’t have to be perfect. And that is half the fun. But do take special care to follow all instructions on your chosen hair products according to your hair type, mixing rations, and timing recommendations.
